From Winifred's old photo album. A little bit of history. The cutting shows Lavender Jane with three of the Iraqi pilots. She is attaching a Micky Mouse doll to the 'plane her father will fly to Iraq for that country's newly formed air force.
I don't know what type of 'planes these were..they are seen to have large single propellors. Any 'plane specialists who might know?
Lavender Jane has the original type Mickey Mouse doll which was replaced by thr more cuddly Mickey which we know today.
The cutting says.... ''Lavender Jane fixing a mascot to the airplane which her father, Flight Lieut. G.Carter is taking to to Irak for King Feisul. He left Hatfield to-day with five Irak pilots, flying 'planes for their country's newly formed air Force''

Miss Winifred Florence Cleaver born 29th June 1905 Nanny to wealthy families
Born in Islington London, one of six siblings. father a builders labourer, mother a laundress.
in 1901 the family lived at 74 St.James Road,Islington,London.
aged 23 she set sail from London to Bombay. In 1932 sailed from London to Singapore twice and in 1936 from London to Bombay again.
At some time she took passage to Egypt and China but no record.
She travelled as nanny to a number of wealthy families. Nothing is known of the names of these families.
She spent all of her adult life as a nanny and then later as a teacher in Egypt.She loved caring for other peoples' children whom she adored. This photo shows her in the centre of a family group none of whom are known other than her charge Gillian, the littlest girl in the front row. The rest of the children are known to be her sisters and cousins. She spent time in India with Gillian's family in the 1920's.
But who are the rest of the family group?
It is thought that Winifred cared for Gillian until she was aged about ten years old.
I am very interested to know who the rest of the family group are, particularly their relationship to Gillian and whether there remain memories or photos of my Great Aunt Winifred Cleaver during this time.
