Old Street Scene in a Hampshire Town / Village

This is a wonderful scene taken in the early 1900s I would say looking at the clothing of the boys in the foreground.

Does anyone know the name of the street and the town or village?

I would be very interested to know.

Hi confession_maker,

What a fantastic photo. I can tell you that the town is Petersfield and as you say, it's in Hampshire, about 16 miles north of Portsmouth on the A3. The street is Lavant Street looking down from the Station behind the camera towards the main town centre. At the bottom of Lavant Street is Chapel Street running left to right.

The clothing puts it around 1905, or thereabouts.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Excellent news. Can I ask how you know it's Petersfield?

...

I live about 4 miles from Petersfield and have an interest in the history of the town. My great, great grandfather started a business in 1886.

I have built a website showing the history of the company, W Seward and Son. www.sewards-of-petersfield.co.uk.

The building at the bottom of the road, middle of picture, is now a Pizza Express! It was a saddlery before that, and a John Menzies before that, and that's as far back as my memory goes (mid eighties).

The houses on the left hand side obscured by trees/gardens have all since extended out and become shops. The picture is taken from the top of the road - the photographer must have had his back to the railway station.
